As an interior designer, I am often asked by friends and clients alike how to make a room feel cozy, finished or complete. They know something is missing, but can’t quite put their finger on it. Making a room look and feel complete comes down to layering - the different elements of pattern, color and texture pull a room together. A room will give you the vibe you’re after by applying seven distinct layers and it’s a principle that can be used in any room.
Let’s take a quick spin through the recently renovated dining room I did for my client.
1. Flooring
A good place to begin is with the floor and progress from there. The floor literally grounds the space and is the blank canvas on which to build, either refinishing the existing floor, or laying new flooring.
2. Carpets
Add instant warmth by laying down a rug. Whether it’s plain or patterned, flat weave or tufted it immediately brings a luxurious dimension to the room.
3. Walls
Wallpaper or a decorative finish on one statement wall, all four walls and/or the ceiling are features that make a room unique and distinctive. Consider also exposed brick to bring in warmth and texture.
4. Lighting
It’s always a good idea to add additional sources of light rather than have the main ceiling fixture be the solitary source. Add table and floor lamps by an armchair and beside the sofa to create intimate pools of light. Who doesn’t gravitate to a comfortable chair with a well placed light beside it?
5. Window Treatment
Unadorned windows can be beautiful, particularly if they’re large framing a garden or skyline. A layer of drapes, sheers or shades add an element of coziness and elegance that an undressed window can’t match. The contrast ribbon trim detail on the leading edge customizes the drapes—something interior design services can help you find.
6. Upholstery
These key pieces of furniture upholstered in fabric or leather provide the next layer to completing a room.
7. Throws, Cushions, Artwork, Collectibles, Mirrors. Books
Decorative accessories are the last, but essential layer that complete the room. Coordinate cushions and throws by picking up on the colors in the rug or wall finish.
Next time you’re in a livingroom, bedroom, diningroom, study, or library that makes you happy and want to stay awhile count the layers - it probably adds up to 7! If it doesn’t, contact me! …and Finn agrees🐶
