The main Art Basel event is held at the Convention Center where there are so many galleries, Philippe and I usually take 2 days to walk through. In the past we've done it in one day, but at some point sensory overload sets in and for me at least, it all begins to blur.
We're here for another round of Art Basel Miami. In its 14th year and still going strong, with more satellite shows than ever spread out all over Miami Beach, expanding as far as Little Haiti in Miami. Art Basel is as much about socializing as looking and purchasing art and regarded as the contemporary art destination for big collectors and novices alike. Here you can entertain clients, extend your network and yes, maybe buy some art.
Lisa Perry, the 60's era pop fashion designer not only dresses, designs and passionately collects clothes from that period, the sumptuous showcase penthouse apartment at 1 Sutton Place South she shares with her husband Richard, is also dedicated to the swinging 60's. I had a delightful visit to view their art collection last summer with the Perez Art Museum Miami. Walking into this very stately co-op, built in 1926 by the renowned architect, Rosario Candela located on quiet, sedate Sutton Place is a big departure from the dazzling white lacquer floors and walls of the atrium where the elevator opens on the penthouse level.
This week's New York Magazine Fashion issue features an article with Kehinde Wiley, a highly regarded artist with a worldwide following, and an upcoming retrospective at the Brooklyn Museum. Wiley is famous for painting classically inspired portraits of contemporary black men with dazzling results. In 2011 he completed a series with 7 black women - "over the next several months, Wiley photographed them, had them fitted for haute couture gowns by Riccardo Tischi at Givenchy, then painted them large scale, in works modeled after French and British portraits from the 18th and 19th centuries."
Art Basel, held in Miami Beach for the 13th year, December 4th - 7th received an estimated 75,000 attendees. It's an event that draws people from all over the world and is as much about socializing and connecting as it is about the art. Art Basel, the main fair, is held in the Convention Center and Design Miami sits across the way. Eighteen satellite fairs are scattered throughout Miami Beach and Wynwood in downtown Miami.
As I mentioned earlier this week, I'm very much focused at the moment on art and thought this would be the perfect opportunity to introduce my good friend, Sylvanus Shaw. Sylvanus' site specific solo exhibition "Give Me Liberty" is currently on view at Fraunces Tavern. These most recent works, invoke imagery of early American statehood in media ranging from oil on panel to collaged holograms, security envelopes and other mediums. "Give Me Liberty" will be on view through March 16, 2015.
Recently my focus has been on the art world. I’ve just returned from New Orleans for “Prospect 3: Notes for Now”, the International Contemporary Art Biennial, first held in 2008. This third Biennial is spread throughout 15 indoor and outdoor venues, showcasing 61 leading and emerging contemporary artists from around the world, including artists local to New Orleans. The exhibition opened October 25 and will continue through January 25, 2015.
